420 stainless steel is a very common stainless steel grade used and this grade is one of the most popular martensitic grade in the world. There are many different 420 grade versions but the most popular 3 versions are 420A, 420B and 420D. 420A grade is written as 1.4021 or X20Cr13 according to EN norm and it is written as UNS S42000 according to UNS norm. This versions contains ~%0.20 carbon and this version can get hardness up to 48-50 HRC after heat threatment.
The second most widely used 420 material version is 420B grade and it is written as 1.4028 or X30Cr13 according to EN norm and it is written as UNS S42000 according to UNS norm. This versions contains ~%0.30 carbon and this version can get hardness up to 50-52 HRC after heat threatment.
Another widely used 420 material version is 420D grade and it is written as 1.4034 or X46Cr13 according to EN norm and it is written as UNS S42000 according to UNS norm. This versions contains ~%0.46 carbon and this version can get hardness up to 52-54 HRC after heat threatment.
When writing the EN norm of the material (for example X20Cr13), the number next to X shows the carbon content percentage of the grade. (In 1/10000 ratio) So X46Cr13 contain %0.46 C element or X20Cr13 contains %0.20 carbon element.
All these versions of 420 can be heat threated and you can find all these three versions at Bircelik stocks. When the carbon percentage increase, the hardness capacity after heat threatment increases. So the higher carbon content allows material to have a higher hardness after heat threatment.
On the other hand, high carbon decrease the corrosion resistance. So for example 420D has a worse corrosion resistance then 420A because of its higher carbon content. So high carbon content has a negative effect to reduce corrosion resistance.
